Somewhere Over the Rainbow Close Reading with Lyrics- Wizard of Oz

This pack includes 4 chapters from the "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz," by L Frank Baum, along with close read questions for each of the chapters. Also included are the lyrics to "Somewhere Over the Rainbow," along with close reading questions linked to this classic song.

I made this pack for my kids, initially to get them interested in classic literature. I included key chapters in this packet to gain student interest. Students then could not wait to read the entire book (which by the way is available online for free as it is copyright free)! This is a perfect common core linked activity, as students are reading long, complex texts, at which point they are discussing and analyzing, while answering text-based questions. You will notice that many of the questions discuss "mood, theme, and tone" as those are the main skills I am currently working on with my kids.

Students will deepen their understanding and use critical thinking skills to understand the meaning of the song, "Somewhere Over the Rainbow," as well as the 4 chapters included.

The lyrics, the metaphors, and the overall theme of this song will create conversation with your students which will have them thinking deeply while reading the text. This was just a little bit of a fun bonus for my kids after we read all four of the chapters from the book.
