Sound Walls are a newer and more effective way of teaching children phoneme-grapheme correspondence (letter-sound knowledge).
- Sound Walls often include mouth articulation pictures. This helps students produce the sound with accuracy and match the phoneme (sound) to its grapheme (letter or letters).
- There are many letters with similar sounds. Mouth articulation pictures help students differentiate between sounds. For example, /f/ as in fish and /th/ as in thumb sound very similar, but the position of your teeth, tongue, and lips are distinctly different.
Implementing Sound Walls is an instructional technique that aligns with the science of reading. Research shows that explicit reading instruction is beneficial for all students and necessary for many. Sound Walls explicitly teach graphemes that go with the speech sounds in our language. Sound Walls provide a way for teachers to introduce regular and complex letter-sound patterns systematically.
