St Patrick's Day Bossy R Phonics Activity and Resource Bundle

Super simple, fun, and engaging St Patrick's Day themed Bossy R / R Controlled vowels resources.

These sheets are great for morning work, literacy centers, fast finishers, interventions, as part of sub plans, home learning and/or snow day packs.

About this resource:

This resource includes color by code coloring sheets focusing on Bossy R ar (hard, car), or (corn, fort), ir (stir, girl), ur (curl, fur), er (per, herd).

There are 4 color by code sheets with the following designs:

• shamrocks : ar, or, ir, ur, er
• pot of gold: ar, or, ir, ur, er
• umbrella: ar, or, ir, ur, er
• tulips with bees: ar, or, ir, ur, er

4 sheets of answer keys are also included.

**A second set of sheets are included with the UK / Australian spelling of the word ‘colour’ (making 8 additional pages)

How to Use this Resource

Use the coloring code to color the picture. For phonics and reading practice, encourage learners to read each word aloud while coloring.

Extend it further – Can you draw a picture or write a sentence using some of the words from the sheets?

2. Phonics Blending Tic Tac Toe for R Controlled Vowels / Bossy R - St Patrick's Day Theme (7 games in color / 7 games in BW)

This resource includes:

• 7 Blending Tic Tac Toe game boards (in color and BW)
• 1 Sheet of Bossy R word lists (in color and BW)
• 1 Drawing/Writing extension activity (in BW)

Making 17 pages total.

Tic Tac Toe game boards include words with the following letters and sounds:

1. ar (car, smart)
2. or (fort, shorts)
3. ur (nurse, blur)
4. ir (whirl, girl)
5. er (herd, after)
6. Mixed Practice - er, or, ar
7. Mixed Practice - er, ir, ur

Learners blend and read the word in the space before putting an X or O. The first player to get three in a row wins the game!

The color sheets are great to laminate and use again and again with erasable markers. A great activity for literacy centers, one-to-one tutoring or interventions! The black and white sheets make great additions to home learning packs.

Extension Activity:

Drawing is a great way for learners to show their understanding!

Phonics: Draw a Scene:

Learners choose three or more words from the Tic Tac Toe board (or you can choose for them). Students then draw a picture based on the words (For example, if the target sound is ‘ar’, they may draw a picture of “a car driving through a market on Mars.” )

Take it further: To add a bit of writing practice, learners can label the target words in their picture. This can be extended further by having students write a caption or a sentence under their picture.
