Description

This math activity is a Pop Picture Page™. It's a fun way to combine a little art and creativity while also practicing a standard. It is Summer themed, as it says "Summer is here!", and it’s on the topic of multiplying 2 digits by 2 digits. Students can solve it using standard algorithm on the sheet, or they could use an extra piece of notebook paper to set up an area model if they need to or they could use another strategy you specify.

**Please do watch the video linked below so you get a better idea of how the digital version works.**

What is a Pop Picture Page™?

They are similar to a color by number page that you might already be familiar with. It is a one-page activity on a given topic. It’s a math page where kids get to add a pop of color. There are 10 problems on a page. Each answer is assigned a designated color to be used when coloring. Students solve the 10 problems, find their answer on the fun picture, and color in that part the picture the correct color.

After they color in the answers, they can have fun adding pops of color to the rest of the picture. It is recommended that students color all parts that touch a different color. This makes the picture have a more whimsical look. The only parts of the picture that will be the same for students are the ten designated colors. This means you will get a classroom full of fun themed images that are all different.

It's also a self-checking sheet, because there are ten answer choices to choose from. Students solve the problems and look for their answer on the image. If they don't see their answer as a choice, they need to rework the problem.

What is the topic / standard of this particular Pop Picture Page™ math activity?

Multiplication of 2 digits by 2 digits. Students can solve it using standard algorithm on the sheet, or they could use an extra piece of notebook paper to set up an area model if they need to.

Why just 10 problem?

10 problems are a good number to either reinforce a skill or check for understanding. It's also a sufficient number if you want to assign a grade. Plus, all 10 problems are on one page, which makes for easy grading for the teacher. That's always a positive!! :-)

Do kids have to do the coloring part?

If you are short on time, kids don’t have to do the coloring part on the math page. You could just have them solve the 10 problems and use the image as a way to check to see if their answer is listed. Another option is to have it as a reward if kids get their work completed in a certain time. They can also pull it out throughout the day if you need something extra to fill the time. Also, if some kids find the digital coloring too difficult you can make it an option for those kids. The coloring part is a a great way to get added practice with using a computer mouse.

What is the theme of the clip art for this Pop Picture Page™?

There page has a Summer theme, as it includes the words "Summer is here!". All art for the main image is original and custom drawn for each Pop Picture Page.

It will be saved into your Google Drive. For the digital version, students will solve the problems on notebook paper, type in their answers, and then use the coloring technique shown in the video to make it POP.
