Description

Your students will love learning about motion, speed, design and staying on budget with this race car themed STEM Challenge called Test Track. This STEAM project integrates math, science, art, and engineering in an engaging and fun way to incorporate project based learning in your classroom!

Students are told that they are going to build their own race cars that need to be as FAST as possible, all while staying with their budget of $29,000! Students choose their car frame (from the 4 options), design the car, put it together, and then add modifications to the race car to make it faster (or not). While designing the vehicle, students keep track of the modifications they make and the money they are spending. After everyone is done building, they will now find out how GREAT their cars really are by grading the features they added, their car choice, and the modifications made. There is a point rubric given to students to give their car a final grade. This ranks the cars in your class. Finish up with included reflection activity so they can process what they learned from the challenge. There are reflection pages included asking students to discuss why some cars had a high grade, while others may have had lower grades based on the modifications made.

Test Track STEM / STEM Challenge and Project Based Learning Activity includes:

  • Teacher Instructions
  • Student Instructions
  • Budget Tracking Worksheet
  • 4 Race Car Templates (print on cardstock for best results)
  • Race Car Enhancements
  • Car Rating / Scoring Guide
  • Race Car Results Template
  • Test Track Reflection Activity

Everything for this a fun and engaging STEM / STEM project based learning activity is included. Perfect to use at any time of the year!

See What Other Teachers Are Saying . . .

I was the coolest teacher in the hallway when I told my kids we were making racecars! They LOVED this and had so much fun planning and building their race cars!

⭐ This is one of many PBL's I purchased and it is a class favorite. I love the deep level thinking required and the student presentations of their final products are always amazing.

⭐ My students were so excited about this activity that I had to break this activity into sections so they wouldn't rush ahead. The first part they had to do was making the budget. I was surprised how they took this seriously and really thought about all of their choices. Once their budget was approved, they then got to color their cars. Because they took time with their budget, they took more time with their cars. I created a digital sheet to enter their final scores to save paper but again, they took time to double check their answers and discussed with each other why they thought items had more value. This was a GREAT activity!!!
