PURPOSE:
Because there are countless tone and mood words, at least as many as there are human emotions, I created this activity to help students learn a large number of the words by physically categorizing them. The idea is that when seeing the word again in the future, they may be able to remember the meaning better if they remember the category in which it belongs. It works the other way as well, in that when a student is trying to describe the tone or mood of a passage, their minds naturally tend toward thinking of these broad categories first. Giving them many words within these instinctive categories opens up their vocabulary so that they may find the most appropriate and specific description of the passage’s tone or mood. Furthermore, the categories in this activity have distinctive colors that should help to trigger their memory.
