Types of Poetry

The purpose of this lesson is to identify the characteristics of narrative, lyrical, humorous, and free verse poetry and compare four poems to determine the type of each poem. Students will make a small project with the attached labels and definitions. Links to recommended poems are included; however, use any poem YOU love to teach this lesson by copy/pasting into the space provided.

English Language Arts and Reading Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS )
TEKS 3.6 A Reading/Comprehension of Literary Text/Poetry. Describe the characteristics of various forms of poetry and how they create imagery (e.g., narrative poetry, lyrical poetry, humorous poetry, free verse).

Note:
You can differentiate these two assignments by filling in more information for students that require more supports to be successful and/or highlighting the words that create imagery. This graphic organizers is perfect for small group instruction, literacy centers, reteaching skills, extending the lesson, and state assessment preparation.
