This is a fun math game to help reinforce the following standard: "Recognize that in a multi-digit whole number, a digit in one place represents ten times what it represents in the place to its right."
NOTE: This game deals with using multiplication to show how much a digit's value increased as it moved left. Please know that there are no questions that ask about the digits becoming smaller. See the next paragraph for a better understanding of how students will present their answer. There are more examples below. Please know that before you buy.
With this particular game, students will compare two numbers with one digit being the same in both numbers. The first number presented has the greater valued digit, so they will be telling how much a digit increased in the first number compared to the second. They will then give an answer like this, “The 7 in 78,490 is 100 x greater than the 7 in 45, 789.”
The amount the value increased will vary. Ex. Some might be 10 X bigger, some 100 X bigger, etc.

What is included in this place value game pack? There is a black and white game board. The game board includes a fun patterned background and clip art. An answer key is provided for teammates to check answers. There are two game board options. Once includes some reminders about how values increase.
How does the place value game work? Students will roll, solve, and then go. On a student's turn, they will roll the dice one time. They will then move that many spaces. Students will then look at the two numbers in their space. They will look at the underlined digits. For example, there may be a 6 underlined in both numbers, but they are in different places. The first number presented has the greater valued digit, so they will be telling how much a digit increased in the first number compared to the second.
A teammate will check using the answer key. If they get it right, they get to move ahead one more space. If they miss it, they move back 2 spaces. The first one to the end wins the game.
What materials do you need to play the game? You will need a dice, game markers, the included game board, and the answer key.

Students would say, "The value of the 5 in 5,097 is 10 X greater than the value of the 5 in 4,580.

How many kids can play? You will need at least 2 players. I typically don't have more than 4 play one of my games, but you can use a number that works best for your class.
What prep does the game take? I created this place value game with easy prep in mind. It prints in black and white. There are 2 pages needed for the game. You can laminate the pages, but I do not. There isn't any cutting involved. This game is pretty much print and go.
How can I use this math game in my classroom? This fun math game will work perfectly for math workshop. It can be used as a center activity as you work it into your math rotations, for a Friday game day, or even for early finishers. It's also perfect to use for review before a unit test or even pull it out before state testing as a test prep activity toward the end of the year. Use this game in your classroom however you would like. Sometimes I send the game home for a homework assignment, and in this case they get to play with a parent. :-)
