Westward Expansion : BINGO Game
Is it time to review some important vocabulary/terms about Westward Expansion with your class? If so, then this BINGO game on important terms and facts may fit perfectly into your class lesson plans. This game is actually called "WEST-O" instead of BINGO to make it go along with the theme:-)
I designed this "Westward Expansion"game for use with my 4th graders, but depending on the state you live in, this topic might be studied in the third or even fifth grade. Please use your best judgment when making a decision.
To give you an idea of some of the topics, here are some key words that will pop up in the game..... Thomas Jefferson, France, 15 million dollars, doubled the size, Migration, Mexican American War, Missouri Compromise, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, Sacagawea, Gold,Continental Railroad ..... and more
When the students go to play the game, each student will get a Westward Expansion themed "WEST-O" board. They will also get a sheet that has 32 answer cards. They will take a few minutes to cut out the answer cards and decide where they want to glue them on their BINGO board. They will mix them up, so that all boards in the class will most likely be different. Eight answer cards will be left over, so not every kid will have every answer on their board.
If you want to 'recycle' the boards year after year, just have this year's class make the boards, color them, etc. Get them laminated, and you can reuse year after year.
The teacher then has 32 question cards dealing with Westward Expansion (facts/terms) along with the answers printed on the question cards. The teacher will pull one card at a time and read it aloud........... more specific directions beyond this are given in the packet, but you get the point. :-)
This is a fun way to end a unit on the Westward Expansion and review before the unit test. Also, this would be something great to pull out toward the end of the year before your yearly standardized testing when it has been months since you have covered the content.
