Description

What is racism and how can we safely challenge it?

In this introductory lesson, the students will explore the meaning of racism, why it is wrong, and how it impacts individuals and wider society. Through a selection of case studies, we will discuss ways that we can challenge racism safely, and reflect on the way that the individuals in the case studies might be feeling. The lesson touches upon issues such as xenophobic comments relating to foreign languages, discrimination and prejudice, Islamophobia, workplace discrimination of natural hairstyles and comments relating to skin color.

This 1-hour fully resourced lesson is suitable for upper elementary (Grades 3 - 5) or lower middle school students (Grade 6). The lesson includes a keyword match up task, an information packet, a video clip with questions, a case study task, and a class debate plenary task.

The lesson has been left editable and is filled with engaging, well differentiated, and fun activities. It is designed to be ‘no-prep’, so you can just pick it up and use it, although it is still adaptable should you wish to.
