Directions for play for digital games:

This is a fun, interactive whole group activity to practice targeted phonics skills and then take it to the sentence level. This activity takes approximately 30 minutes for each digital game.

    • Open the PowerPoint slide show. Make sure it is open in SlideShow view and not Presenter View or the game will not clear automatically.
    • Project the game board on a whiteboard.
    • Students roll a die to see who goes first. As students roll a number, they choose a word from the column they roll.
    • Click on the word and it will reveal corresponding practice sentence. After the student reads the sentence click the creature in the top, right-hand corner to return to the game board.
    • The game ends when the board has cleared.

Directions for play with printable games:

    • Print off a copy of the game you would like students to practice - one copy per individual, partner group, or small group. There needs to be one die to go along with each game. You can also put the games in a plastic sleeve and give students a dry erase marker to mark off words as they go.
    • Students roll a die, then choose which word to read from the column.
    • When they correctly read the word they can X it out or put their initials on that word.
    • When all words have been read the game ends.
    • A writing extension of this activity could be to have students choose 5 words from the game board to create their own sentences from.

Please note that some functionality is lost when the digital games are used on iPads. The game boards will not clear automatically.
