What educators are saying

I used this resource to give reading comprehension in SS. It allowed all my students to read about the subject they are learning about in history.
Students were thrilled to learn about the wars. They always want to get to these chapters and this year we actually did it.

Social Studies Interactive Notebook #4 Information

Please read carefully, as there are a lot of details about this notebook pack. If you have any questions or are unsure about anything, please ask before you buy. I take my ratings very seriously:-) Plus, I don't want anyone to be disappointed with what they buy. I want you to LOVE it as much as I do!

About this notebook....This notebook #4 pack has been a labor or love. It has literally taken me months to write the passages. I am very pleased with the finished product and I hope you are too.

This interactive social studies notebook covers historical topics from World War I all the way to September 11th-9/11. It is sure to get your students excited about studying U.S. History. Your students will read about historical events while practicing reading strategies. In addition, they will reflect and write about what they have read as they complete the interactive journal activities.

My students in the past have always loved and taken great pride in their journals. Their interactive notebook/journal is also a great resource to pull out at the end of the year for state testing and reread about important events. What a great bonus!

This interactive social studies journal includes the following:

*23 close reading passages on 19 topics

*Teacher discussion questions for each passage

* 23 interactive comprehension flippable notebook activities (one per close reading)

*Answer Key for all interactive activities

~~Please note ahead of time that I do NOT include student samples of each page. I have never done that, as I don't feel it is necessary. I include one single sample to show you what one of the activities might look like in the notebook.

Please do click the 'preview' above to get a glimpse of included items.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The 23 close reading passages were written with 4th-5th graders in mind, but you may find they are also valuable resources for older students that need the social studies concepts broken into smaller parts to better understand.
Because these passages are non-fiction, and because they cover some of the same topics that are touched on in even high school classes (after all, the facts are the facts, no matter what grade you are required to teach them), there may be a few situations where these passages would work for grades well above fifth.
NOTE: These passages can all be purchased separately in my store, but when bought separately, you do NOT get the interactive activities
Click the links below to see each passage listed separately in my store.
1.) WWI/World War One- Joins Forces against Germany
2.) Treaty of Versailles
3.) Jazz Age - Roaring 20's
4.) The Great Depression
5.) The New Deal
6.) World War II- Causes of WWII
7.) WWII- World War II in Europe
8.) Hitler and the Holocaust
9.) WWII- World War II in the Pacific
10.) WWII- The Homefront during World War Two
11.) Civil Rights Movement
12.) Cold War Origins
13.) Cold War Conflicts
14.) John F. Kennedy (JFK)
15.) Vietnam War - US Involvement
16.) Middle East - US Involvement
17.) Soviet Union Collapse and End to Cold War
18.) Persian Gulf War - US Involvement
19.) NOTE: I use the same passage as this pack, September 11th- click here, but it has a different flippable activity. The format is set up the same as the other 18 passages above.
*********Several of the packs above have 2 passages, making it a total of 23 passages.
*******************************************
Just a few more notes…. When I write my passages, I try to sum up the major events surrounding the topic of the passage. There may be other details you would like to include that I did not include, so you can pull other resources for that.
My goal is to write an article about the topic that is not as overwhelming as the often wordy textbooks. Textbooks can sometimes provide so much information that fourth and fifth graders cannot even figure out what the important event is.
The push today in the elementary classroom is to teach the kids the skills of close reading. Focus on and analyze a shorter passage. Hold the details of the passage under a microscope to really examine it. Teach a reading lesson while also introducing a social studies topic... it makes covering the social studies content so much easier.
**** These readings are not going to be as detailed as say a history book. All information is accurate like a history book would be, but they are short, sweet, and to the point. My purpose in writing these was to include as many of the important details as possible in a short article.
I did not use any clip art with the individual passages (they are on the flippables in the notebook packs) because I wanted the focus to be on the words and not images.
