1. Nonfiction Article
This can be used for close reading, whole class read-alouds, shared reading, centers, homework, partner reading, independent reading… and much more!
2. Interactive Note-taking Page
This page is designed for students to be able to read a paragraph of information at a time, pausing to determine the main idea and key words. The student is then able to think about what that one paragraph is about and draw a quick sketch before moving onto the next paragraph. This method of reading combined with note-taking improves reading comprehension, reading stamina, and student engagement with the text.
3. Student Notebook Article Versions
This page has the nonfiction article in a smaller format so the entire article can be cut out and glued into each student’s journal. There are two articles on each sheet to reduce the amount of copies you need to make! :)
4. Comprehension Quiz/ Answer Key
Each quiz can be answered using the information in either the nonfiction article or the interactive note-taking sheet- or both! The students are asked to highlight where they find each answer in the text which is great practice for citing evidence. Each quiz also has students complete a constructed response question based on what they read. Each quiz also has students complete a constructed response question based on what they read. The answer key for each quiz includes an example of a quality constructed response answer.
5. Engaging Enrichment Activity
The activity for each topic is designed to reinforce and enrich the information from the article, interactive-note taking page, and the comprehension quiz. They work great for collaborative group work!
