Description

This 11 slide Math Activ Studio flipchart for Promethean Board teaches students to write fact families using related facts (inverse operations). This lesson is aligned with the Houghton Mifflin Math Series, 6.5 - 1st grade. This lesson begins with the "Problem of the Day" in which students are given a subtraction problem with visual manipulatives. The teacher may choose the subtraction method he or she thinks is most appropriate for the class to solve the problem (e.g. cross out method). Next, the flipchart displays the daily objective, then reviews vocabulary terms needed to understand the content of the lesson: subtraction, addition, related facts, and fact family, along with examples. Next, a calendar is displayed and students are shown that there are many ways to make a number, and invited to find pairs of numbers on the calendar that equal 10, the teacher then uses this opportunity to describe the numbers as parts and wholes. Next, students are given a word problem, and must use the visual manipulatives to demonstrate the part/whole with an addition and subtraction problem. For the next several slides, students are given numbers in which they must complete the fact families. The teacher can do this whole class, with partners, individual, or a combination of all of these to complete the activities in the flipchart. The students are then given a list of guided and individual work to complete (aligned with the textbook directions). The next slide is a review and closure slide to summarize the lesson learned for that day, including a higher order thinking question. Last, the students are given a math journal entry in which they must write a fact family they know and draw a picture to represent it.
