Students will use graph paper or the included handout to make area rugs. They will calculate the area using the grid array (multiplication or repeated addition) and record it in each rectangle. The concept of congruent shapes is addressed briefly. Students will have a finished product that they can hang on a bulletin board or tack on the refrigerator at home! They should be able to show their parents how they found the area of the rectangles.
