The BONUS ZIP FILE: 10x Reading Comprehension Program

Reading novels can be a complex task for students.

This program focuses on shorter articles, allowing students to digest and comprehend the content more effectively.

Shorter articles allow students to focus on practicing reading comprehension strategies and active reading without the complexity of longer texts.

Imagine being on a long hike, tired, and at the back of the line. The group takes a break, but by the time you get there, the break is over, and you're left behind. Shorter weekly articles allow everyone a chance to take a break and catch up.

BONUS ZIP FILE - PROGRAM OVERVIEW

With 14 weeks of content, consistent formatting, and a focus on shorter articles, this program provides a tailored and engaging approach to reading comprehension for students of different levels in Middle School and High School!

    Here's what's included:

    • The “10x” Effect: This refers to a 10-fold increase in student engagement by shifting from whole-class instruction to 10 small groups of student-directed learning by using the “idea volleyball” strategy.

    • 14 Weeks of Content. There are 14 non-fiction reading passages and 6 reading strategy lessons. Each reading strategy includes a handout with 4 pro tips.

    • Timing Guidance: While specific timing for each week is not provided, information about the number of slides and video length gives a relative idea of how long each reading lesson will take.

    • Flexible Pacing: Some classes may complete the program in 14 weeks, while others may need up to 28 weeks, depending on your students’ reading level and the depth of conversations you get into during “idea volleyball”

    • Consistent Format: Students read each article in pairs using “idea volleyball” to “say something” about the text. There is a reading strategy-specific graphic organizer or a double-entry worksheet for students to document their learning. A consistent format allows students to focus on reading comprehension (instead of spending energy trying to figure out what to do.)

    • Differentiated Reading Passages: Each passage is written at three or four grade levels to suit both strong and struggling readers.

    • Inclusive Discussions: Each paragraph is numbered so students reading different levels can still participate in the same conversation.

"This is a great resource for struggling students."

    — ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Malia F. (used with 9th-10th grades)

"Students in my class struggle with all concepts with reading. The resources included are great, can't wait to see the benefit for all the students!"

    — ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Patricia E (used with 11th, 12th grades)

Feedback left on "Reading Comprehension Strategies MEGA Bundle + Differentiated Reading Passages" which is included in this growing bundle

    ASSESSMENT AND EVALUATION

There are several optional assessment and evaluation opportunities in this reading program.

    • Answer Key: Provided for all passages (except for the "Axe Body Spray" article).

    • Rubric: The same reading comprehension rubric is used across passages, allowing teachers to use their professional judgment for their specific grade level and jurisdiction.

Diagnostic, Formative, and Summative Assessment Opportunities

For teachers looking to get marks for report cards, this program suggests the following timing:

    • Diagnostic Assessment: At week 2.

    • Formative Assessment: At week 8.

    • Summative Assessment: At week 14.

In every lesson (week), there are two assessment opportunities:

During Reading Assessment: While students read the text in partners and play "Idea Volleyball," teachers can assess their learning through:

    • Anecdotal Observation: By listening to the conversations during "Idea Volleyball," teachers can gauge students' understanding and engagement.

    • Written Evidence of Learning: Students document their thoughts and learning in a double-entry journal, or by using a before/during/after graphic organizer tied to a specific reading strategy. These written tools provide concrete evidence of what students are grasping.

After Reading Assessment: Once the reading and discussion activities are finished, the following assessment methods apply:

    • Written Evidence of Learning: Students' understanding can be assessed through their short answer responses to discussion questions, a paragraph response to a specific discussion question, and a metacognition reflection page. These written activities provide insight into students' comprehension and their ability to reflect on what they've learned.

These multiple stages of assessment offer a well-rounded view of students' reading comprehension and analytical thinking, both through observation and written reflections.

"This will be very beneficial in providing reading strategies for students with disabilities."

    — ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Kelley R (used with 10th, 11th grades)

Feedback left on "Reading Comprehension Strategies MEGA Bundle + Differentiated Reading Passages" which is included in this growing bundle.

Do you teach English Language Arts to Middle School students?

Sometimes, by the time students get to Middle School, they think they're either a strong reader, or they're not. And that's just the way it is.

But, of course, we know that strong readers are using invisible tricks and prior knowledge to infer deeper meaning when they read. Strong readers may not even realize what they're doing as they read. They just "get it"... or they don't.

This Reading Comprehension Strategy Bundle is about focusing on strategies and a growth mindset. It's about making the reading comprehension process more visible.

    • Stronger readers get an opportunity to reflect on what they are doing when they read. Metacognition (thinking about thinking) can help us become better. Not everything works for everyone all of the time.

    • Struggling readers get an opportunity to realize that there's a secret playbook that strong readers are using. If they use the pro-tips in this reading comprehension strategy bundle, then they can improve.

Obviously, if students are reading an informational text significantly above their reading level, then they'll spend all of their energy and time trying to decode the words instead of understanding and comprehension.

And if students are reading something that is too easy, then there might not be as much opportunity to work on reading comprehension strategies to figure out what's going on at a deeper level.

The beauty of this reading comprehension strategy bundle is that each non-fiction informational text is a differentiated reading passage available at three or four different grade levels.

So you can use a version of the reading passage handout that is appropriate for your strong readers and struggling readers.

    MINDSET MATTERS

If your Middle School or High School students have already given up, you might need to try to adjust their attitude before using this reading comprehension strategy bundle.

    ..... Apr 8, 2024 SOLAR ECLIPSE 2024 ONE-DAY SALE!

To celebrate the total solar eclipse (2024) crossing over North America, I'm having a one day sale on three of my big bundles!

    • The Educircles SOLAR ECLIPSE 2024 SALE starts at 12:00 AM and ends at 11:59 PM (ET)

It's April. You need to get work done. Are your students in learning mode or do they need a pep talk? Can you relate to any of these classroom problems?

Problem #1: Students don't try, especially when things don't work right away. They give up.

Problem #2: Students don't do the right thing or stand up for each other. Being part of a classroom means being an active citizen. We don't always agree, but it's important to speak up.

Problem #3: Students don't know how to work in groups. Collaboration is not the same as teamwork. One person doing all of the work is not collaboration.

Problem #4: Students are mean, especially when they're upset. Good communication isn't just about presentations. It's also about getting your point across when both sides are upset, and things matter!

Problem #5: Students wait for someone else to solve their problems. Creativity is about connecting ideas in new ways. When you are faced with a tricky problem, we use creativity to create a solution. Creativity is a skill we can learn.

Problem #6: Students believe rumors, gossip, and viral posts. They don't think for themselves.

Problem #7: ALL OF THE ABOVE

    • ➡️ Check out this CHALLENGE TASK. Can your class learn about a growth mindset while trying to stay in a growth mindset at the same time?

My name is Mike Fuchigami. I'm the Grade 8 teacher behind Educircles.

    • I taught middle school English Language Arts for 13+ years in Ottawa, Ontario.

    • I want to help your students develop Growth Mindset and Social Emotional Learning skills.

Teachers around the world have DOWNLOADED 109,957 Educircles resources in over 59 countries!

    • I donate 10% of everything I earn to STUDENT MENTAL HEALTH organizations. It's a promise I made to get through some dark times.

    • Together, we've donated $15,520.51 (Check out the donation log.)
