Who doesn't love watching Christmas movies? Engross your students into these great movies and handouts. These guides may also work well as sub plans for your substitute teacher. The pack includes the following movie comprehension questions + extras:

    ************************************************************

    1. A Christmas Carol

    This 12 page movie guide with handouts accompanies the film "A Christmas Carol (2009)" - Grades 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12

PART 1 – Comprehension questions in chronological order. I have made two sets for differentiation. The multiple choice questions may also work well with ESL/ELL students. Answer keys included.

    • 35 questions requiring full sentence answers.
    • 35 multiple choice questions with 3 possible answers

PART 2 – Storyboard and synopsis

    • Students to draw a 9 scene storyboard of what they believe to be the most important parts in the movie. To include a brief description for each scene. Remind students they can look at the movie questions to help with the sequences.
    • Using their storyboards as guides, students to write a synopsis of the movie.

PART 3 – Writing. Students to write about the 3 ghosts who visited Scrooge (could work well in a group of 3). For each one, students need to do the following tasks:

    • Drawing the ghost
    • Describing what the ghost looked like
    • Briefly describing what happened in three of the places Scrooge visited.

Adapted from the book by Charles Dickens, this movie is about Ebenezer Scrooge who thinks Christmas is all humbug. Later, Scrooge encounters the ghost of his late business partner, who warns that three spirits will visit him this night. The ghosts take Scrooge on a journey through his past, present and future in the hope of transforming his bitterness.

The first one has been done as an example. Next is writing about 3 feelings; happy, sad and excited, and when they felt that way while watching the movie.

This movie is about two princess sisters, Elsa and Anna who lose their parents when they are still young. How can movies help students learn English?

Learning from movies is motivating and enjoyable

    - Sometimes students need a change in style, and movies are generally an integral

    part of a student's life.

Movies provides authentic and varied language

    - It's always a good idea to introduce students examples of English in real

situations. This includes accents different to your own.

    Movies gives a visual context

    - This gives the student the ability to interpret the language in full visual context.

To see such visual supports as facial expressions and gestures simultaneously.

    Variety and flexibility

    - Movies can also act as a springboard for follow-up tasks such as discussions,

debates on social issues, role plays, reconstructing a dialogue or summarising.
