A Color of His Own by Leo Lionni is a wonderful story about animals, friendship, acceptance, colors, and chameleons to use in your speech therapy!

Who: For Speech-Language Pathologists AND teachers working with students in preschool – 1st grade targeting:

What: Included are 6 phonological and language activities to be used with A Color of His Own. The book is not included.

When: During spring/fall or when students are studying reptiles.

Where and How: Use across multiple individual or small group speech sessions. Also great for home programs and RTI packets!


Activity DETAILS:

Activity 1: Comprehension Printable Worksheets and Easel Assessment

Students answer questions and cause and effect statements about the story. Picture answers provide visual cues.

Activity 2: Phonological Printable Worksheets and Easel Activity

Students select the correct objects while practicing rhyme words, initial sounds, and syllables. Target pre-literacy skills of letter-sound knowledge with sounds/words that appear frequently in the book. Great for articulation as well!

Activity 3: Preposition Printable Worksheets and Easel Activity

Students select the correct prepositions by answering the WH question “where”. Fill in the blank sentences and picture answers provide visual cues.

Activity 4: Sequencing Printable Worksheets and Boom™ Cards

Students reorder the events in the winter scenes related to A Color of His Own story. Then, they retell the story using the visuals. BONUS link to a BOOM CARD deck with drag and drop sequencing features.

Activity 5: Vocabulary Printable Worksheets and Easel Activity

Students select items that match the category, function, or attribute. Picture answers provide visual cues.

Activity 6: Find & Color Printable Worksheet and Boom™ Cards

Use this forest themed scene to aid in the understanding of the basic concepts of space, quality, and dimension (i.e. relational words). Link to free Boom Card Deck included.
