    Description

This resource includes THREE PowerPoints (and FREE guided notes) about the properties of soil (lesson 1), human impact on soil (lesson 2), and solutions to those impacts (lesson 3). These lessons were made specifically to align with AP Environmental Science during unit 4 - Earth Systems & Resources (4.2 and 4.3). If you are new to teaching AP Environmental Science or would like to revamp/spice-up your class, you will love these new, fresh PowerPoints that will keep your kids excited and engaged from beginning to end. Although this was made using the APES CED, it is basic information that could easily be used for any class learning about soil!

    What You Will Receive:

    • 1. The 83-slide PowerPoint. Please click the video preview above to view the Presentation. It includes a bell ringer/warm-up and slide descriptions to help prepare your lesson and lead class discussion. My PowerPoints are designed to not only engage students from beginning to end, but also cover all the information in the CED as effectively as possible. To achieve this, the lectures inter-weave content, over-arching themes, case studies, and essential learning skills. The breakdown of the three lessons are:
      • Lesson 1: Formation and Properties of Soil
      • Lesson 2: Human Impact on Soil
      • Lesson 3: Solutions to Human Impact on Soil

    • 2. Guided notes without blanks. This is the "key" and I have these for students who have disabilities. This is not included in the price since some people do not use guided notes.
    • 3. Guided notes with blanks (again, not included in the price). I give students the entire unit note packet, but if you are just buying the one lesson, it just includes notes for this 3-lesson PowerPoint. Scaffolded notes allow students to watch and listen, while only noting key vocabulary and labeling of diagrams. I find this is the most effective note-taking style.
    • 4. A soil properties lab. This lab is a staple in AP Environmental Science! There are many versions of it online, but my version is simplified down to a:
      • 1 page teacher guide (preparations and materials)
      • 1 page class copy directions (only need to be printed first year)
      • 1 page student handout with data tables and conclusion questions that align with information students need to know about properties of soil.
      • Students will prepare a soil texture jar a week prior to the lab. On the day of the lab they will perform a porosity test, a permeability test, the soil texture test, and a quick pH test before and after limestone deposition. The lab takes about 60 minutes for students to complete (about 75 including the soil texture jar preparation).

    • 5. Kiss the Ground is an amazing documentary that I watch in two 45 minute segments with my students (since I spend three days on soil and one after-PowerPoint activity is the soil lab). If you do not have enough time there is a shorter education-version of the documentary available upon request on their website. You will need a different video guide...there are many here on TpT.
