Description

Each partner gets a clock with 12 unique mixed number addition problems to solve. Each partner's clock problems are different but the answers are the same, which encourages collaboration and teamwork between the students. If one student gets stuck, the other can help. If student answers differ, the partners work together to figure out the correct answer before moving on to the next problem.

The activity is self-checking, providing students with instant feedback. It includes a printable version, a drag-and-drop digital version in GOOGLE Slides, student answer sheets and an answer key.

How the activity works:

Students paste their START slip at 12 o'clock, add their mixed numbers and then find the answer on the top of another slip. They then paste this next slip at 1 o'clock and solve its problem. Each answer students find will lead to the next addition problem to solve.

Students find answers to all 12 of their problems until they get back to 12 o'clock. If all problems are correct, the answer from the 11 o'clock slip will be at the top of their START slip.

(*For a similar activity with unlike denominators, please see: Adding Mixed Numbers Partner Scavenger Hunt.)

*This activity can also be given to individual students to complete. To use it this way, give each student one of the clocks. The activity is still self-checking. For the GOOGLE Slides version, make a copy of the activity and delete the second clock before sending to students.
