Description

This differentiated element project allows students to explore atomic theory and atomic structure while building background on the periodic table of the elements by researching an element and building a scaled Bohr Model. It addresses STEM concepts as well as research, reading, writing, and math standards and can be assigned as a station rotation activity to use during small group instruction. Each student is assigned a different element from the periodic table. After researching his or her element's properties, history, uses, and fun facts using the Element Adoption Certificate, each student creates and shares a digital presentation using smore.com. He or she also designs and builds a scaled, themed Bohr Model of an atom to represent that element. By making and sharing their Bohr Models and Smores, students learn about subatomic particles, atomic number and mass number, energy levels, and electron configurations. They also begin to recognize periodic table trends.
