Description
Students translate expressions from words to numbers and symbols and then evaluate their expressions in this activity that doubles as classroom decor. Once a pennant is complete, it can be hung along a string in your classroom to show the world that, "Hey, we know how to translate and evaluate!"
Most expressions involve wording that requires grouping in the translated expression. An example expression is "Eight times the difference of 14 and 3" where students need to recognize that "the difference of" requires the placement of parenthesis.
Included are 30 pennants that each ask students to translate and solve an expression. Also included is an optional student answer sheet and an answer key. There are also plenty of places on each pennant for students to color and have fun. Each group of students can be given a set of pennants, scissors and either glue, tape or a stapler. Students can be in charge of cutting out the pennants. Groups can compete to see which group can complete the most pennants or your entire class can add pennants to one string as they complete each one. You may also choose to have your students color their pennants to add to your classroom decor.
