Description

What is a Family?
An American Sign Language Unit
Contents
ASL POSTERS
These posters include the family words:
Family, Mom, Dad, Brother, Sister, Grandma, Aunt, Uncle, Nephew, Niece, Cousin
ASL MASTERY CARDS
These cards are the master cards that include the sign, written word and fingerspelled word.
These cards can also be used as the calling cards for the bingo games and as self-checking cards for the spelling cards.
MATCHING/ WORD WALL CARDS
These cards can be used for your word wall or as a matching game center.
FAMILY CHARACTER CARDS
These cards are provided for students as additional support for students to role play the members of their families. It is always best for students
to bring pictures of their family members, however, this is not always feasible. Therefore, these cards can be used to demonstrate the members
in their families. There are a variety of characters and students can choose the ones that best resemble their family members.
WE ARE A FAMILY STORY BOOK
Families are extremely diverse these days. I tried my best to give an overview of the members of families in various situations. Please feel free
to put together your book including or omitting pages as you feel best fits your classroom.
MY FAMILY STORY
Again, it is best for students to be able to bring in their own family photos but drawings or characters may be used to represent individual families.
Allow students to create a book that best describes their family adding or omitting pages as necessary.
FAMILY SPELLING CARDS
Print, laminate and cut out the cards. Allow the students to use dry erase markers to practice.
Students can use these cards to practice writing the correct word for the sign and the fingerspelling.
FAMILY BINGO
There are 5 different sets of cards presented in 4 formats. The caller can use the master cards (with the green border) to call out the family word.
Students place a marker on the board when the word is called out. The caller can vary the mode in which the words are called out. ex
fingerspelling the word, using the sign etc.
FAMILY SORT
Students sort the members of families based on male or female. Two worksheets are provided. Choose the appropriate level for your classroom
