Ancient Rome Lesson: Geography of Ancient Rome

The geography of Rome played as crucial a role in the development of the culture as it did in Ancient Greece. While mountains kept city-states isolated and at odds with one another in Greece, flat terrain made unity an option in Rome. There were, tough, mountains to the east and north to provide protection, flat, fertile plains which made farming easy, and rivers with sea access to facilitate commerce and wealth. In many respect Rome was in the perfect place.

None of this will make much sense if the students cannot generate a clear mental map of Rome, its topography and its neighbors. This assignment is designed to help make that mental map as clear as possible.

This lesson can be used independently as a geography skills lesson, or can be used as part of our bigger Ancient Rome unit.
