Description
A fun and engaging scavenger hunt activity that helps middle and early high school students practice balancing chemical equations by moving around the classroom, searching for 30 different game cards, and balancing a variety of chemical equations!
Part of a Suite of Balancing Chemical Equations Products
I use this scavenger hunt activity after formally teaching my students the components of chemical equations and how to balance them through a PPT presentation, 3 worksheets and before assessing their understanding using a selection of 4 different formative quizzes. Links to these products are found below:
Worksheet - What are Chemical Equations?
Worksheet - Balancing Chemical Equations (2 Worksheet Bundle)
Quiz - Balancing Chemical Equations (4 Quiz Bundle)
Product Contents:
- 2 sets of 30 balancing chemical equation cards each (see below for details)
- 1 student worksheet
- 1 color-coded answer key
- 2-page teacher's guide
Preparing the Scavenger Hunt:
To prepare the game, create a set of cards by printing the 30 chemical equation scavenger hunt cards on one side of the page and the unique scavenger hunt logo wallpaper on the other. Cut the cards apart. Instructors may wish to print on heavy card stock and/or laminate to make the cards more durable.
Next, make enough copies of the included student worksheet for teams of 2 students.
Then, print a copy of the color-coded answer key so that the instructor can quickly check student solutions as they come up after solving each card.
2 Different Methods of Play:
(1) Active Scavenger Hunt!
- For an active scavenger hunt, set aside an area of the room to place the cards. For example, the instructor may use tape to hang the scavenger hunt cards on walls and/or cabinets around the room. The cards may also be hidden, such as on bookshelves, inside lab drawers, and in other suitable areas.
- Then, students working in teams of 2 move around the room to locate a card, bring it back to their desk/work area, copy and balance the equation on their worksheet, and then check their solution with the instructor.
- Once the chemical equation is correctly balanced, students return the card to its original location and move on to locate the next card.
- At the end of the set time period, teams count the number of correct equations.
- The team with the greatest number of correct equations is the winner!
(2) Structured Stations Activity!
- If the room or the class makeup is not conducive for an all-out scavenger hunt, a more structured stations-style activity can be done with the same set of cards.
- The cards can be taped or laid face down on desks around the room in numerical order.
- Then, students working in teams of 2 start at a different card, preferably with 1 empty station in between. Teams solve the card at their own station and then check their solution with the instructor.
- Once correct, they move on to the next station, in numerical order.
- At the end of the set time period, teams count the number of correct equations.
- The team with the greatest number of correct equations is the winner!
2 Different Sets of Cards Included
- I have included 2 different sets of chemical equation cards (x30).
- Set 1 does not have the answers printed on the back of the cards so that students must come up to the instructor to check their solution. This format makes it ideal for scavenger hunt-style activities.
- Set 2 includes the answers on the backs of the cards and are designed to be cut out, folded in half, and then taped to create double-sided cards that include the answers. This format allows students to check their work as they go but more importantly, can also be used as an excellent review or study tool.
