What educators are saying

A pinch of Kinder math units never fail to disappoint. Thank you for the engaging lessons and activities and saving this teacher from having to plan it out on my own.
This unit was a wonderful way to introduce my students to Canadian coins. The centres were engaging and fun. I would highly recommend this resource to anyone considering. Thank you!

UPDATE LOG

- 03.24.24: A coin poem with loonie and toonie added! (7 pages)

—————————————————————————————————————————————

This is a resource for teaching Canadian coins/money to young learners. I created this for my Ontario FDK (Full Day Kindergarten) classroom but most of the activities should be appropriate for Grade 1 as well :)

Here is what is included:

The file was given a full update on March 30, 2023. Most activities were updated with new graphics and fonts and new activities were added as well. Please re-download it to get the updated version! The previous 2 versions are still included in case you preferred the old designs.

• 6 day lesson plans with corresponding curriculum expectations from The Ontario Kindergarten Program, 2016

Page 7: Word Wall Cards: to use at centre or on your math wall

Page 8-10: Sound It Out: Reinforce names of coins and practice identifying their beginning sounds.

Page 11-24: Coin Sorting Mats

Page 25-34: Coin Patterning: Extending coin patterns. Patterns included are AB, AAB, ABB and ABC.

Page 35-45: The Coin Poem (2 versions: with and without the penny): Pocket chart pieces, mini posters and take home versions.

Page 46-65: Feed the Piggy: Picture cards and sentences are included. Please use the cards that work best for your class! Students look at or read the cards and fill the piggy bank with the corresponding coins. A real piggy bank makes this centre really engaging but if you don't have one I provided a paper one you can use! I also added some extension prompts that encourage students to count how many coins are in the piggy all together or to count the value of the coins.

p. 66-81: Roll & Cover: Roll the coin dice, find the coin (manipulative), match it to a coin on the mat and cover it. Keep rolling until you fill up the mat! Dice template is included.

p. 82-85: Spin, Find, Match & Cover: Spin the spinner, find the coin (manipulative), match it to a coin on the mat and cover it. Keep spinning until you fill up the mat!

Page 86-88: Coin Anchor Chart Cards

Page 89-97: What's the Value?: Students add up the coins and place the correct value in the box at the end of the strip. Great for kids who want a challenge and to practice skip counting!

Page 98-99: Coin Value Drop: Drop the coin into the correct jar! A detailed explanation of the set-up and a picture is included in the file.

Page 100-129: My Book of Canadian Coins Booklet: 4 versions included; trace the word, trace the sentence, fill in the blank, and write your own sentence. There is also a cover without the penny included and a word bank page. Use the pages that best fit the needs of your classroom!
