What educators are saying

I love using this to give "real world" context to the material my students are learning. My students also love the "Amazing Race" portion of the assignment and competing in teams to be the first to finish.
This was a great resource to use as an extension to the Religion curriculum and the Pope's Laudato Si paper. The students enjoyed it and are now conscious of how they impact the environment which also plays into their biodiversity unit in science.

Description

Practice modeling multistep linear inequalities in this 21st Century Math Project which asks students to compute and consider ramifications of carbon emissions. Students will use real world emissions data from transportation and food creation. The unit will tie together in an epic Amazing Race style showdown to see who can make it across the country with the lowest footprint. Students will look at transportation and food in a new way as they help characters make choices about their lifestyle.

Although students will learn elements of carbon emissions, the lessons focus on creating and using multi-step inequalities to model situations and make decisions. With an increasing focus on environmental issues this explores a view on a science topic that students may never have been exposed to before.

Bring environmental science into a math classroom!

In this 27 page PDF you will receive a mapping to the Content Standards, an outline for how to implement the project, handout resources for students to use, and an answer key. ***THIS PRODUCT HAS BEEN UPDATED WITH A GOOGLE SLIDES INTERACTIVE VERSION INCLUDED. REDOWNLOAD IF YOU HAVE IT ALREADY***

In all it is three different assignments --

-- Planes, Trains & Automobiles. Students will write multistep inequalities to determine if individual’s daily transportation "needs" exceeds the CO2 emissions totals described in the Kyoto Protocol.

-- Well-Traveled Food. Students will use the Food Footprint Chart to complete this assignment which provides a look at food production and transportation emissions and the difference between local and traditional food sources.

-- the Amazing [more environmentally conscious] Race. Using a CO2 Emissions Per Activity chart, student will make travel and food choices on a cross country trip.

Use variables to represent quantities in a real-world or mathematical problem, and construct simple equations and inequalities to solve problems by reasoning about the quantities.
Solve word problems leading to inequalities of the form 𝘱𝘹 + 𝘲 > 𝘳 or 𝘱𝘹 + 𝘲 < 𝘳, where 𝘱, 𝘲, and 𝘳 are specific rational numbers. Graph the solution set of the inequality and interpret it in the context of the problem. For example: As a salesperson, you are paid $50 per week plus $3 per sale. This week you want your pay to be at least $100. Write an inequality for the number of sales you need to make, and describe the solutions.
Define appropriate quantities for the purpose of descriptive modeling.
Choose a level of accuracy appropriate to limitations on measurement when reporting quantities.
Create equations and inequalities in one variable and use them to solve problems.
