In our school, 4th grade is the year the students start to look at maps more closely. They learn about latitude and longitude, what a map key is for, and how to set up and understand a compass rose.
This lesson will awaken the creative storyteller in your students by encouraging them to create their own lands - complete with names, topography, and decorative elements.
While I use it for 4th grade, this could easily be used all the way up through middle school classes and could be a perfect addition to a creative writing lesson!
