Cause and Effect Rationale

Children are familiar with cause and effect. They have been explaining their actions since they first learned to speak. Even though the concept has been learned, they may need practice in identifying cause and effect in the writings of others and especially in nonfiction writing. On open response questions, logical answers should be acceptable even if the student’s answers are different than the answer key.

The suggested order of instruction and practice for this cause and effect resource is:

1. Play the ‘I Have, Who has’? Cause and Effect Game as an introduction to the concepts of cause and effect.

2. Discuss, develop together or chart the signal words used to identify a cause and effect relationship.

3. Given two sentences of cause and effect, have students combine them using a signal word to make a complete cause and effect statement.

4. Matching exercise where cause is given and student must choose the logical effect.

5. Cause and effect fill in the blank where the student generates either the missing cause or the missing effect maintaining the relationship and noticing the underlined signal word(s).

6. Student identifies and writes cause and effect and circles or highlights the signal word(s). The theme for this worksheet is zoo/wild animals and includes parts of our prompts used in similar main idea resources (see similar products below).

Cause and Effect I Have, Who Has? Game Directions

The game can be played as a center or as a class depending on class size.

To play the game, distribute the cards among the students involved.

The game starts with "I have the first card” and ends with the card that has "Let's play again!" on it as well as the word ”FINISH" at the bottom.

The student with the first card reads both the “I have…” and “Who has…?” parts out loud. Then, the next student that has the card that matches the "who has" description that was read aloud will read their "I have…" and “Who has…". The game is played until all cards have been read.

So there are a variety of ways that it can be played in terms of small group, partner work or as a whole class (depending on class size) but every game will follow the same sequence so you'll know if they are getting it correct.
