Each civic responsibility passage and set of questions takes up a single page and includes an optional extension activity for further learning. The topic of each civics passage was chosen to meet the streamlined social studies TEKS for 3rd grade all about what it means to take part in civic responsibilities. Multiple genres are used including fiction, expository, poetry, diary entries, biographies, infographics, graphic organizers, and maps.
These civics passages could be completed together in a small group setting, individually, or used for a station or center activity. The possibilities are endless!

The Social Studies TEKS covered in this Good Citizenship resource include:
- Citizenship. The student understands characteristics of good citizenship as exemplified by historical and contemporary figures and organizations. The student is expected to:
- identify and describe individual acts of civic responsibility, including obeying laws, serving and improving the community, serving on a jury, and voting; and
- identify examples of nonprofit and/or civic organizations such as the Red Cross and explain how they serve the common good.
