Consonant blends foldable cut and paste activity pl sl and gl beginning sounds

A fun cut and paste phonics activity for early readers at home or school. This matching resource looks at 3 consonant -l blends - sl, gl, and pl (at the beginning of words).

The finished foldouts look great in an interactive notebook and can be used to recap known vocabulary or even to introduce some new words. They are also a bit different to a standard consonant blends worksheet!

In addition to learning about or reviewing consonant blends, children will also be practicing their fine motor/scissor skills and their hand-eye coordination.

The templates

For each sound, there are 2 template choices that children can use to make their foldout (see below for words used on each to check they will be suitable for your learners). Firstly they will color the letters and pictures. Next, they’ll cut out the 4 words and match them to each picture before sticking them down. Pupils will then cut around the outside of the template before folding along the vertical lines. A great way to practice scissor skills as well as reading!

The foldout can then be closed to show just the blend letters, then carefully opened to reveal what’s inside.

Some children may require extra adult support with cutting or folding.

Gl template 1: Glue, glass, glove, glow

Gl template 2: Glasses, glitter, glad, globe

Pl template 1: Plank, plug, plant, plate

Pl templates 2: Plane, Planet, plum, pliers

Sl template 1: Slip, sleep, slug, slice

Sl template 2: Sleeve, slide, slam, slime
