What educators are saying
Description
This is a great space-themed STEAM engineering design challenge.
With NASA making plans to try to send a group of astronauts to Mars in the 2030s, there is a lot of new interest in designing space settlements. This activity has students design a space facility. In doing this they will need to solve the problems that arise because of the conditions that exist on Mars. This activity can be done as individuals or in groups of 2-3.
- Students start by researching conditions on Mars and understanding the issues those conditions pose for space explorers.
- They then answer 10 questions directing their designs to come up with solutions to these problems....
- Finally, students draw a diagram of the facility, space suit and transportation vehicle they have designed.
- You can add on to this product by having students present their facility diagrams or even BUILD them!
This activity is now digital! Students do some research on the website about Mars, then design a space station! Students can submit the answers to questions in google classroom and design on google slides or upload a picture of their hand drawn final design!
Good Luck!
