ELA Test Prep is important. We want our students to feel ready and confident for anything! This bundle includes 5 resources that can be used with grades 3, 4, 5, and 6. Activities range from secret family notes to motivate on the day of the state assessments to strategies for responding to the text when answering short response questions to test prep passages for additional practice.
What resources are included? Check out some brief descriptions below!
Encouragement for Testing: SECRET Parent Notes
This is an exciting way to encourage your students to do their best on days of testing at school! I do this every year to give positive support to my students during stressful testing. Each day during testing, kids look forward to their words of encouragement!
How do I use this resource?
Personalize the letter included with the information about your school testing. Pack the letter, envelopes, and notepaper in a manila envelope. Attach the “Secret Mission” header to the outside of the manila envelope.
Send this home for families. If you have parent-teacher conferences before assessments, that is a great way to ensure that students do not peek!
When parents send the notes back to school, put them in a safe place. I have 3 days of ELA and 3 days of Math testing in NY, so I usually ask parents to write a letter for the first day of each test for their child to open on the morning of. If a child’s family does not send a note in, I write one.
ELA Test Prep for Short Response Writing Questions
Teach your students how to respond to the text with written response questions! Use these ELA test prep short response question strategies when initially introducing responding to the text while working on ela short response questions. How to answer short response questions must be taught explicitly. These short answer practice questions will prepare your students. Choose a strategy, and be prepared with rubrics and writing paper to guide students through the process of responding completely. Use these short response questions strategies to give your students the best chance for future success!
Choose a strategy that works for your kiddos! The short response questions on the state assessments are so important to explicitly teach. I've included several strategies to use, color-coded versions, teacher comment cards, larger versions of each strategy as a visual, and smaller versions for kids to keep as bookmarks (laminated to check off each part as they complete it).
In my class, we use colored pens when initially learning how to write a short response. We color code each component. As we get better at written responses, we begin to use different color highlighters to check our writing. The kids love it!
Included:
RATT (Restate, Answer, Text-based detail, Text-based detail)
RATTS (Restate, Answer, Text-based detail, Text-based detail, Sum it up!)
RAPP (Restate, Answer, Prove it, Prove it)
RAPPS (Restate, Answer, Prove it, Prove it, Summary statement)
Writing paper for each with a checklist and evidence statements
teacher comment cards for each.
ELA Test Prep Passages and Questions for Use During Small Group Instruction
Teach your students how to respond to the text with written response questions! Use these ELA test prep passages leading up to state assessments or when initially introducing responding to the text while working on short response questions. How to answer short response questions must be taught explicitly. These short answer practice questions will prepare your students. Use these reading passages with short response questions to give your students the best chance for future success!
Here are three sets of small group test prep instruction! Print and GO! Focus on reading short passages, answering short response questions using a solid strategy (RATTS - Restate the question, Answer the question, Text-based detail, Text-based detail, Summarize), while being given evidence sentence starters at the bottom of the pages to support students.
There is a low(grade 3), a medium- with extended response (grade 4), and a high passage- with extended response (grade 5).
Academic Vocabulary Words Student Journal for Successful ELA State Test Prep
A comprehensive list of academic vocabulary words is invaluable for students in grades 3-6. What are academic vocabulary words? They are words that frequent state assessments and typically challenge or confuse students.
This academic vocabulary student workbook is based on the frayer model of vocabulary acquisition. Students are expected to rewrite the definition in their own words, write an original sentence using the word, draw a picture representing the word to help them remember, and develop a synonym for the word.
I created two versions. One is blank boxes. The other has lines for students to write their definitions and sentences on embedded within the boxes.
Research proves that students need to be explicitly taught the testing words for state assessments. By using mini lessons and a workbook during student word work stations, students will have repeated exposure to this higher level vocabulary.
NYS ELA Grade 3-5 Test Prep Posters
After going to the Rochester Area Literacy Council workshop recently, I created posters to use in my classroom to support some test prep that we're incorporating into fourth grade. I used the ideas from that workshop to create these 11 posters. I also included duplicates of the posters, in black and white, or in colors, and with varying readable fonts.
I printed these posters at 11x8 and mini posters near my guided reading table. I used our school poster maker to make larger versions to hang from my window blinds as a larger visual for the class when they are not meeting with me.
