What educators are saying

The materials were thoughtfully curated, engaging for my students, and saved me so much prep time. Grateful for such a quality resource.

Description

This Electoral College lesson is an awesome way to ensure your students understand the process of how the president is elected, along with famous examples of how it has impacted various elections in US History.

The download includes a PowerPoint (and Google Slides option) overview all about the Electoral College

  • The Constitutional background
  • How the Electoral College works
  • Who the electors are
  • Issues with the process
  • Quotes from Alexander Hamilton and James Madison
  • ... and more!

A guided notes worksheet is included for students along with an interactive notebook graphic organizer option.

There's also a flipped classroom video version of the presentation! This is a fully-narrated overview that explains everything in detail and is perfect for assigning to students, showing in class, saving for absent students who missed your lesson, or just watching yourself to prep!

Next, students analyze elections from American history, including the presidential elections of 1824, 1876, 1888, 2000, and 2016. These were either contested elections or ones where the electoral college winner did not match the popular vote winner.

An answer key and editable Google Doc version of this is included for your convenience.

The included lesson plan details how to use all of the resources. It also includes links to recommended videos, online sources, and more!

This resource can also be downloaded (along with many more activities) as part of my Political Parties & Elections Unit Bundle.
