Description

Level up exponent mastery with this versatile set of task cards that covers simplifying exponent expressions. 30 short answer questions are included in this simplifying exponent expressions activity that allow students to show off their understanding of exponent rules. A digital Google form version is included, along with the printable task cards.

Included in this Exponent Activity:

  • Two Formats to Choose From: Use the printable short-answer cards with recording sheet, go digital with a Google Form featuring the same questions in multiple-choice format, or use both at the same time. Students can use their own paper to simplify the expressions on each card, then student input their answers to the Form.
  • Comprehensive Coverage: Equips students to utilize the product rule, power rule, zero rule, and simplification of negative exponents.
  • Adaptable Designs: Pick from a colored border or opt for a minimalist black and white.

Using the Task Cards:

  1. Pair Work: Hand out a card to each student within a group, facilitating peer discussions and collaborative problem-solving. Rotate cards every 2-3 minutes.
  2. Solo Challenges: Distribute cards and set the pace with a timer. For added engagement, have students change seats to encounter fresh challenges.

Tip: Laminate and secure the task cards on a ring for longevity. They're perfect for centers, bell ringers, exit tickets, or full-class activities. Embrace flexibility and variety.

Explain how the definition of the meaning of rational exponents follows from extending the properties of integer exponents to those values, allowing for a notation for radicals in terms of rational exponents. For example, we define 5 to the 1/3 power to be the cube root of 5 because we want (5 to the 1/3 power)³ = 5 to the (1/3)(3) power to hold, so (5 to the 1/3 power)³ must equal 5.
Rewrite expressions involving radicals and rational exponents using the properties of exponents.
