WHY?

Teaching genre types can strengthen students' reading skills by making them more active readers and encourage reluctant readers to discover new types of genres that they enjoy reading.

The first step for students to understand the variety of reading genre types is to understand the difference between fiction and nonfiction texts. Once students have this foundation, you can easily build upon it by introducing more specific genre types.

WHO?

  • Designed for upper elementary students in 3rd, 4th, & 5th grade.
  • Use with lower and higher grades to explicitly teach fiction and nonfiction elements.

If these look too complex for your students, try the Reading Genre Posters, which include only the basic student-friendly definition, genre title, and vivid graphics to support each genre type.
