Description

Prep for the first day of creative writing! This creative writing file contains a presentation that covers expectations for creative writing and is both editable and digital friendly as well as several versions of a syllabus. Then, to set the tone and establish community, complete a graphic organizer to encourage creativity. Finally, show students a show vs. tell video to establish expectations.

Included in this creative writing download:

Creative Writing Expectations
Explain to students how writing is a collaborative effort and that they will successfully build upon prior knowledge to succeed with writing. Before diving into creative writing lesson plans and peer editing, I set expectations with secondary writers.

Creative Writing Syllabus

Two versions of a creative writing syllabus are included. I also included a sample syllabus for a creative writing class that will give you ideas to get started.

Graphic Organizer

To continue to build community within a creative writing class, we complete a graphic organizer titled, "Where is Creativity?" Students brainstorm familiar areas that they may not realize have creative pieces.

Show vs. Tell

Show a quick video to establish expectations with show vs. tell, an important concept in any creative writing setting. Learn when to show and when to tell. Notes for the video and links are included.

Overall goals of this creative writing download:

√ To provide structure and ideas but room for personalization for you.

√ To establish trust, encouragement, and a strong sense of community of writers.

√ To encourage young writers and empower them to share their own stories.

In a creative writing unit or class, I establish with students that they their effort and willingness to collaborate is what makes the class successful. Students must take advice and input from adults and peers during creative writing lessons.

Sharing this presentation, guidelines, and graphic organizer sets students up for success. I also often share pieces of this with parents during meet-the-teacher night.
