What are STEM Tales?

STEM tales are a series of STEM challenges that are accessible for your youngest engineers; they use a fairy tale that your students are likely already familiar with. By adding in a story element, those students that might typically shy away from STEM activities may engage with the story to solve a problem for one of the characters.

✏️ Why STEM Tales? ✏️

  • Easy to implement, whether you are new to STEM or a seasoned STEM educator.
  • Uses the EDP: Each story guides the student through the engineering design process seamlessly, using the 5-step process: Ask - Imagine - Plan - Create - Improve
  • Interactive and engaging: Students record their work as they go and complete the story in the process.

✂️ What materials will I need to complete this activity? ✂️

Printable characters are included in the resource. You will need recyclable materials or building items, such as blocks and craft sticks, as well as some coins or washers. I always try to design my STEM activities to be budget-friendly, and always encourage teachers to use the items they have on hand.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ "My students had fun making a bed! We used all kinds of materials and the kids loved putting Goldilocks on at the end to see if they were successful."

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ "Super fun activity. I used this with K-4 and was able to change the difficulty of the activity to meet my kids capabilities by altering the types of materials that I allowed the students to use."

Describe measurable attributes of objects, such as length or weight. Describe several measurable attributes of a single object.
Express the length of an object as a whole number of length units, by laying multiple copies of a shorter object (the length unit) end to end; understand that the length measurement of an object is the number of same-size length units that span it with no gaps or overlaps.
Measure the length of an object by selecting and using appropriate tools such as rulers, yardsticks, meter sticks, and measuring tapes.
Generate measurement data by measuring lengths of several objects to the nearest whole unit, or by making repeated measurements of the same object. Show the measurements by making a line plot, where the horizontal scale is marked off in whole-number units.
