The Novel Study Contains:

1. CHAPTER RESPONSE PAGES - These handouts present prompts regarding specific characters, settings, conflicts, important ideas, significant quotations, literary devices, etc. Students enjoy working on this response work in small groups or with a partner after reading. Since Sachar uses short chapters with cliff hangers, I have grouped the chapters so students don’t have to stop after every one for response work. These response pages get students thinking and discussing the events of the novel using text-based details, and this work assures the teacher that students are "getting" all the important ideas.

2. PRE-READING – A handout where students access prior knowledge and feelings about topics associated with the novel

3. “THE STORY OF ELYA YELNATS” – A handout with the background story of Stanley’s great-great-grandfather outlined with numerous blanks. Students choose answers from a word box to solidify their understanding.

4. 50-WORD VOCABULARY STUDY – Grouped by chapters – Students study the definitions given and then fit the correct words into provided sentences. They also choose words to illustrate and compose sentences of their own.

5. VOCABULARY QUIZZES – 5 15-question quizzes, grouped by chapters, that match the word listings on the vocabulary pages.

6. DETERMINING THEME – Four theme topics are offered, each on an attractive 2-page handout, with prompts and guides that lead students to gather text evidence and determine a theme around the topic.

7. “PAST AND PRESENT” GRAPHIC ORGANIZER - A 2-page handout on which students show their understanding of the 6 topics that connect to both plots, such as onions and Mary Lou

8. PARAGRAPH WRITING ASSIGNMENT and CHARACTERIZATION ORGANIZER - Paragraph Assignment on "How Stanley Changes" - 12 of Stanley's actions are time-lined on the organizer and students track Stanley's feelings, attitudes, and character traits. The organizer is then linked to a "How Stanley Changes" Paragraph Writing Assignment.

9. NEWS STORY WRITING ASSIGNMENT - Students have a choice of 4 different events from the novel (listed) for their news story. The assignment follows the writing process and news story requirements. An editable directions and requirements page is included.

10. END-OF-NOVEL TEST – 40 Questions - 15 matching, 25 multiple choice, Covers the whole novel.

11. ANSWER KEYS and TEACHER GUIDELINES

Your students will enjoy these activities, and they will be able to stay on track with comprehension from the first page of the novel to the last!
