Students make a fun and easy Indian rangoli craft to celebrate India’s biggest festival of the year, Diwali, the Festival of Lights.
INDIA! Watercolor Doodle Rangoli Mandala teaches students about rangoli, an ancient art form that is used to decorate floors and entrances to homes in India. Rangoli is also known as mandala or kolam. Then students practice radial symmetry using watercolors and markers to add color and doodles to their own template.

- Introduction to rangoli in a slideshow format (no printing needed)
- Art project instructions
- Choice of three printables
- Optional tutorial on radial symmetry
- Optional step by step instructions to make 3 specific sample designs (can be printed or emailed to students for them to follow independently - may be more appropriate for older students who wish to make one of these specific designs with younger students just doodling the way they want to)
Materials needed to make one craft are 1 sheet of white card stock (8.5" x 11") for printable, watercolors with brush (ex: Crayola), bowl of water, paper towel, and fine tip markers (ex: Crayola).
