Inside Out Movie Guide (2015) - Movie Questions with Extra Activities

This computer animated film from Disney and Pixar is about five personality characters that exist in the mind of 11-year-old Riley. Riley’s life was going great in Minnesota, but suddenly her family moves to San Francisco for her dad’s job and Riley has some difficult adapting to the change. Her personality characters, Joy, Anger, Disgust, Sadness, and Fear all go on a whirlwind adventure in her memory to try and bring happiness to Riley’s new life.

This particular movie guide is great for your students because it not only gives them questions to answer while watching the movie, but it also includes extra activities to have them practice their critical thinking skills and self-reflect on various aspects of the movie that can relate to their own lives. Your students will critically analyze topics about adapting to changes, strengths, memory, and others. This film and movie guide also do a great job at having the student/viewer reflect on their own personality and what areas are most important in their lives.

This 2015 animated film is rated PG and stars the following actors and actresses as the voices of the characters: Amy Poehler, Phyllis Smith, Bill Hader, Lewis Black, Mindy Kaling, and others. The running time for the film is 1 hour and 42 minutes long.

This movie guide includes the following:

• 20 short Answer Questions – These are short questions to be answered while students watch the movie. They are basically used to keep the students’ attention and hold them accountable for the activity. These are usually completed individually but could also be completed in small groups.
• 10 Critical Thinking Questions – These are questions for students to answer after having watched the movie. They are to be completed individually in about 2-3 sentences. They are designed to allow the students to practice their critical thinking skills based on various parts of the movie.
• 5 Reflection Questions & 5 Superlative Questions – These reflection & superlative questions are to be answered individually after having watched the movie. They can be answered in about 2-3 sentences but are designed to have students relate various parts or aspects from the movie to their own lives.
• Character Analysis – This activity is to have students analyze various characters in the movie to recount what they liked about them, what their biggest strength was, weakness, etc.
• Art Activity - This activity is to have students try and express some aspect of the movie through the use of art. Students are asked to draw or create something using their imagination and/or the information they obtained by watching the movie.
• Group Activity – This activity is to be completed in a small group and is designed to have students work together as a team in order to complete the instructions or objectives for the activity. Once finished, the groups can share their work with the rest of the class if the teacher wants them to.

All the questions are available in a PDF format for quick and easy printing as well as in a Word format in case you would like to modify some of the questions to the specific needs of your class. A Teacher Answer Key is available for the 20 short answer questions and I have also included a document with instructions and recommendations for using this movie guide in your classes.
