Description
Students multiply fractions using visual references in this digital GOOGLE Forms activity. Because this is a digital-only activity where students cannot actually shade the area model grid to show the fraction overlap on the common denominator, I have included 2 images per problem as explained below.
A problem's first image presents the fraction multiplication problem and a blank area model grid to help students visualize the problem. There are 2 short-answer questions to go along with this image:
1: What is the product of these two fractions?
2: Simplify your fraction answer.
Next, a color image where the grid is shaded to show the multiplication is presented with a multiple-choice question:
3: Looking at the picture, does the boxed region represent your answer?
Students can either choose: "Yes, it does!" or "No, I will go back and try again". The Google Form allows students to go back to revise answers.
My hope is that the problems presented this way will help walk students through the necessary steps and encourage critical thinking. If you want to set up the activity in a different way, the Google Form is editable.
Included are 20 fraction multiplication problems, a teacher directions sheet, editable student directions in the form, the editable Google Form and a PDF answer key.
PLEASE NOTE: The fraction multiplication problems in this activity are the same as in my Multiplying Fractions Math Pennant Activity, presented digitally.
