Description

In this hands-on activity and lab, students get to see Natural Selection in action. Students color butterflies then cut them out. Next, one group of students hides the butterflies in plain sight and another group of students then "eats" as many as they can find in 1 minute! It's amazing that any butterflies will be left on the walls, but the ones that are left are mostly the ones camouflaged to their backgrounds! This shows students exactly how Natural Selection happens in nature. I liked to bring my class into the hall, start the 1 minute and let them enter the classroom all at once to begin "eating". You can really have every kid hide butterflies and every kid also "eat" them. That will also work!

Included in this download is a lab report graphic organizer that scaffolds the Scientific Method, student direction cards and butterfly coloring sheets. An optional PowerPoint presentation that explains Natural Selection, Adaptation, Evolution and Mutation is also included but is not necessary to complete the activity and lab.
