Description

Nelson Mandela collaboration poster designed to integrate art into your classroom while learning about Nelson Mandela and South Africa. Two Nelson Mandela poster lessons are included, plus bonus activities.

These art activities are intended to complement/supplement any Nelson Mandela or South Africa lesson or unit you teach. It’s a great way to start a unit or cap one off. These art activities are an engaging and entertaining way for students to work together to create a large poster of Nelson Mandela! They make a great classroom focal point and a lasting example of collaboration for your students.

Each poster has 30 pieces (each fits on a regular 8.5" x 11" piece of paper), and the final poster size is approx. 35 in. by 42 in.

Lesson #1: Nelson Mandela Coloring Collaboration Poster:

Ideal for elementary school students

This lesson is very easy with hardly any prep for teachers. Each student is given one section of a large mosaic poster to color according to the instructions on each sheet. Once all sheets are colored and cut out, they are then assembled to reveal a large multi-colored mosaic/poster/mural of Nelson Mandela in traditional South African colors.

Lesson #2: Nelson Mandela Drawing Collaboration Poster:

Ideal for middle school and high school students

This lesson is not hard but is more challenging than the coloring version in Lesson #1, and that is why it's designed for middle school teachers, high school teachers, or art teachers.

In this lesson, each student will draw their own grid piece using a small version of their assigned gridcell as a reference. Once the pieces are drawn and cut out, the classroom poster can be assembled. This lesson engenders a lot of cooperation among students to get all of the drawings within the individual gridcells to line up well and produce a nice looking final poster of Nelson Mandela. This is all about working together, and it’s all about the kids. As the teacher, you don’t have to worry about anything ~ except for some cheerleading and encouragement!

The results from both Lessons are stunning!!

BONUS: “Unscramble the Portrait” Nelson Mandela handouts

My group collaboration posers are a lot of fun, but at the end of the project, each student doesn’t get to keep anything (tangible). I have created these extra activities so that each student might have a copy of Mandela, in one form or another, to keep for themselves.

Many teachers auction off the final posters to their students - or come up with other creative ways to give the posters away.

Extra activities Included are:

  • Unscramble the Nelson Mandela portrait drawing.
  • Unscramble the Nelson Mandela portrait cut and paste (with two grid variations)
  • Line drawing of Nelson Mandela to color.

These are all great handouts to use while studying Mandela. I hope these extra materials are helpful to you.

Also, I have many other Collaborative Group Portrait Posters, including:
