New Year's 2022 Activities: STEM Stations

This set of 5 New Year's traditions activity stations is a cross-curricular way for students to learn about how New Year's Eve and New Year's Day is celebrated in different ways around the world. The five stations incorporate reading, writing, math, engineering, and art for an experience that your students will love!

By incorporating reading, writing, math, engineering, and art these New Year's stations are the perfect way to reach all learners in the weeks coming back from winter break.  

These stations are purpose-built to keep engagement high when attention spans are low leading up to the holiday break. 

Topics included in these stations:

⭐Eating for Abundance

Students read about the Estonian tradition of eating multiple meals on New Year's Day to give them strength for the year and then plan the meals they would want to eat.

⭐Colorful Underwear

Students read about the South American tradition of wearing colorful underwear on New Year's Eve to bring you luck in different areas of your life and then design their own pair of colorful underwear based on their goal for the new year.

⭐Jumping into the New Year

Students read about the Danish tradition of jumping off of furniture at midnight to leap into the new year and then compete for the longest standing jump.

⭐Ringing in the New Year

Students read about various traditions held in Japan surrounding the new year and then write a Haiku about their hopes for the year to come.

⭐Popping into the New Year

Students read about the traditional Sydney Harbor Bridge fireworks show held each New Year's Eve in Australia and then engineer their own bridge that can hold three toy cars.

These stations are easy to prep but do require a few outside materials including popsicle sticks, dough or modeling clay, devices for research, cookbooks, yardsticks, and markers or colored pencils. Please check out the preview for a full list of materials for all five stations.
