Number the Stars is the Newbery Medal winning novel by Lois Lowry. The year is 1943 and Copenhagen has been overrun by the German Army. Readers will enjoy the coming of age story of Annemarie Johansen who desperately strives to be brave amidst the German occupation as her family strives to save her friend. When it becomes clear that something must be done, a daring plan is created to try to smuggle the entire Jewish population of Denmark across the seas to Sweden.

This story is one of a full country’s bravery. It is one of a nation’s heroism, the Resistance movement, and an attempt to save nearly seven thousand people across the sea to Sweden, told with pride and hope through one girl’s eyes.

Lowry masterfully creates this historical fiction story based on real events that transpired in Copenhagen. Annemarie’s story comes to life based on the real experiences of Annelisee Platt, Lowry’s good friend, and one who grew up in Copenhagen during the occupation. The reader feels connected to the young heartthrob Peter who has lost the love of his life and risks everything as a leader of the Resistance to undermine the German Army and help smuggle people out of Copenhagen to safety. Based loosely on the true story of Kim Malthe-Bruun who was captured and executed, Lowry seeks to do justice to the heroic acts of an entire nation to demonstrate empathy, bravery, and a conviction to doing the right thing.

This book will have your readers itching for the next chapter. A perfect edition to read aloud together as a class, or for an independent book study for summer reading. This true story shows that courage, ingenuity, and true grit can help you endure and overcome the biggest obstacles. This unbelievable, riveting story will grab every reader’s attention from the first chapter.

The Boy in the Striped Pajamas is an historical fiction novel set in Germany during World War II. The story follows Bruno, a 9-year-old boy growing up in a sheltered and privileged life, unaware of the war's realities or his father's involvement with the Nazi regime. When Bruno's family moves to the countryside, he discovers a fence separating their home from a concentration camp. Through the fence, Bruno meets and befriends Shmuel, a Jewish boy his age, leading to a poignant exploration of friendship and the war's impact on civilians.

John Boyne's novel, though brief, is deeply affecting, prompting readers to contemplate the war's consequences. The characters, from Bruno and Shmuel to the supporting cast, are skillfully crafted, eliciting both love and disdain from readers. Despite being a work of fiction, the story feels hauntingly realistic, highlighting the human experience amidst wartime turmoil.

The Boy in the Striped Pajamas is a powerful and unsettling narrative. Boyne's writing skillfully portrays the development of a timeless friendship between two boys on opposite sides of a fence, underscoring the senseless division caused by war. Through Bruno and Shmuel's story, Boyne encourages readers to reflect on life's most valuable aspects and to consider what truly matters in the face of adversity.
