What educators are saying

This ended up being the perfect activity for right before spring break! The kids loved creating their scenes. Some of them even extended it into creating other habitat scenes. Perfect science integration.
This was a good way for students to develop their scale drawing skills that wasn't just making a drawing of a building/room. Our school in near the ocean, so students are into marine life.

Description

The best classroom decor is student-created and I love this project! Students will demonstrate their knowledge of scale drawings and proportions by drawing 7 marine animals (blue whale, great white shark, dolphin, starfish, sea turtle, manta ray, and orca) and 1 human diver using the same scale. The only way to truly compare the sizes of these creatures is to see them side by side and proportional. Centimeter grid paper is provided and students will use the scale 1cm = 3ft. The average dimensions of each living thing are provided on the instruction sheet. Included is a grading form to make your life easier - it's a half sheet with two printed on one page to save paper. Once you grade a few, mistakes will jump out at you so the grading goes quickly. Some of your students will LOVE having art to do with math and some will say they aren't good at drawing (oh, the drama!). I tell my students that if art isn't their thing, they can make silhouettes of the animals and leave out the detail. I remind them that math is the most important part of this activity.

NOW INCLUDES a 2-minute YouTube video to help students get started on the project. This is especially helpful for absent students and remote learners.

These are absolutely amazing on your walls for Back to School Night or Open House.
