Periodic Table Practice - PT Trends Worksheet

Description
Need a formative assessment that will help determine if your students truly comprehend the trends of the Periodic Table?
This is it!
This assessment allows students to demonstrate whether they understand the Periodic Table by applying their knowledge to a never-before seen table and unknown element. This task reviews the following learning concepts: How elements are arranged in terms of mass and atomic number; how an element’s atomic number can tell you its’ proton number (in a neutral atom); how atomic mass provides information to find the number of neutrons. Further, students apply their knowledge of how elements are arranged in periods and families/groups and are asked to describe how they interpreted the table to find this information.
I’ve used this assessment year after year with my grades 8 through grade 10 students in science. This is great as a pre-assessment before a final unit test or as a student entrance or exit slip! Also makes a great review for grade 11 & 12 students as a brain warm-up (especially after a long summer or winter break)! For students that require additional practice, I simply relocate the unknown element. I have found this exercise to build confidence in all levels of learners with respect to their understanding of the periodic table. Answer key included! I appreciate all feedback and hope that you enjoy!
Happy teaching!
