Description

PhET Simulations are a classic staple in middle school science classrooms, and this guided virtual lab packet will help your students get the most out of this powerful yet easy-to-use States of Matter simulation!

✔️ What's Included:

This virtual lab packet can be printed or completed digitally. There are a total of 5 pages, separated into two parts:

☄️ Part 1 - States of Matter Basics:

  • Students access the sim and record observations about H2O and neon in solid, liquid, and gaseous phases, including a particle diagram, temperature ranges, and observations about particle motion.

  • A graphic organizer with mini-beakers is provided for students to create their own particle diagrams.

  • Students then respond to a prompt asking them to consider the differences between atoms and molecules, using examples from the simulation.

  • Students compare and contrast the behavior of H2O and neon (attention on the solid phase).

☄️ Part 2 - Phase Changes (Temperature & Pressure):

  • Students choose a substance and record observations about what happens to the particles in that substance when heat is added, when pressure is added, and when more particles are added.

  • Students record the effect on several variables in easy-to-use graphic organizers.

  • Periodic table tiles for all elements referenced (O, Ar, Ne) are included, helping students make connections.

  • Five analysis questions are provided for students to choose from.

Updated to include 5 easy-to-read infographic posters / student notes about states of matter - perfect as inserts for student notebooks or laminate for classroom use.

NGSSMS-PS1-4
Develop a model that predicts and describes changes in particle motion, temperature, and state of a pure substance when thermal energy is added or removed. Emphasis is on qualitative molecular-level models of solids, liquids, and gases to show that adding or removing thermal energy increases or decreases kinetic energy of the particles until a change of state occurs. Examples of models could include drawings and diagrams. Examples of particles could include molecules or inert atoms. Examples of pure substances could include water, carbon dioxide, and helium.
