There are multiple steps to teach phonemic awareness.
I broke down the steps and put them into 4 research based units.
All of the research, planning and prep work have been done for you!
Scientific research supports these steps:
- UNIT 1 - ALLITERATION & 1ST SOUND ISOLATION
- UNIT 2 - RHYMING
- UNIT 3 - ONSET AND RIME
- UNIT 4 - FLUENCY WITH PHONEMES - blending phonemes, segmenting words, identifying and comparing/contrasting first, middle and final sounds within words and phoneme substitution to create new words.

Important Note:
Phonemic awareness focuses on sounds (phonemes) in our spoken language, and this does not include written letters. We use oral language activities and pictures to teach phonemic awareness.
Although we are not attaching letters to sounds in these units, after completing these phonemic awareness units, your students will be fluent with identifying first, middle and final sounds in CVC words. This is incredibly helpful and important for when they begin decoding words.
